Celebrate PPA Challenge 200!

PPA200 CELEBRATION

Join us to celebrate PPA challenge 200!  Both design teams have joined together to make this week special and you can join the fun.  Details are on the Pals Paper Arts Blog so play along with us!

 PPA200

You’ve probably noticed a monochrome theme throughout the challenge samples from all of us.  I chose to work with Perfect Plum.  Lavender and purple have been favorites of mine since I was a youngster.

There’s a funny story about the evolution of the card you see above.  I knew exactly what the card should look like. With Perfect Plum on my mind, I dug in and created this version.

WWPA2014-04-17 Perfect Plum ORIGINAL

Do you see the problem yet?  It doesn’t resemble the sketch for our challenge AT ALL!  So much for multi-tasking, eh?  Luckily our Design Team Leader reminded us to use the sketch.  There I was, at 30 minutes before deadline, ripping and tearing and cutting and, well you get the idea.

This is testimony to inspiration in it’s finest hour.  Since I seemed to be on a roll, here’s one more version of the card.  This one was created for a dear friend of mine who will remain nameless until I make sure she’s received the card.

WWPA2014-04-17 Perfect Plum Oriiginal with

Try a monochromatic theme they really turn out beautiful.  This is a great time to use your Framelits and simple embellishments for accents.

Smile…

WWPA2014-04-14Smile! You're on Candid Camera!Smile…. you know what comes next…. “You’re on Candid Camera!”

If you read my Spring Cleaning in the Wild West post yesterday, you know that there’s a lot of dust settling around the Tack Room (aka dungeon when it needs cleaning).  Here’s another card kit that kept getting pushed around.  It’s from the 2013 Stampin’ Up! Convention Pals Swap.  My Pal didn’t have time to put it together so gave it in “shoebox” form. Trouble was, I didn’t know what it was supposed to look like!

All pieces except ribbon and camera elements were folded and tucked neatly into a plastic sleeve.  But, a critical element was missing, the picture and instructions.  I had no clue which stamp to use either. Seems that there was a conversation about an email being sent at some point but that doesn’t help me a year later.  Argh!  Why did I wait so long?

After looking at it upside down, inside out, standing on my head, and other contorted positions, the cute Designer Series Paper started to speak to me.  It clearly said “I am ME so let me be!

Hmm, how about a camera on the front flap?

Smile... You're on Candid CameraNow the inside.  Sometimes that’s the most difficult part of a card.  “Here’s lookin’ at you kid”, or possibly a picture and caption were all front-runners.  Then, while putting a stamp set away the word “Smile”, part of the Happy Day Stamp Set jumped out.  How perfect is that?

Smile... You're on Candid CameraAll in all, this project really came out well.  But, take it from me, don’t wait for spring cleaning to tackle these little kits.  It’s soooo stressful.  Barbara C., if you’re reading this, I hope I’ve done your kit justice.

See you tomorrow for fresh Weekly Deals & Downloads.

Spread the Clockworks Joy

WWPA2014-04-10 Spread the Clockworks Joy - 2PPA199Look at the beautiful colors we have for the Pals Paper Arts color challenge this week.  Calypso Coral, Pear Pizzaz and So Saffron make it easy to Spread the Clockwork Joy! Normally metal or grunge colors come to mind with a set like Clockworks but trying something completely different than the norm sometimes works out really, really well.

There’s a sweet story behind this card. If you’ll bear with me for just a minute….  My husband is not able to drive and we had a milestone anniversary this week.  He asked, “Do you know someone that could make me a card?  I can’t get to the store and it’s my anniversary.”  I chuckled and told him I’d gladly take him to the store to pick something out.  No, that just wouldn’t do.  I decided not to give him a card so he wouldn’t feel bad.

Later that evening, I presented him with the card you see above and told him that I had picked out my card.  He smiled, looked at the sentiment and said, with a puzzled look on his face, “Bucket List?” We both had a good laugh and all was right with the world.  It’s not about things, but the feelings we give one another.  These are the memories that will last.

Now, back to the card at hand. The heart and banner are part of a customer designed set called Spread the Joy.  It was one of the winners during the “In With You” contest Stampin’ Up! held in 2013.  They were colored with Stampin’ Write Markers, then fussy cut and popped up for dimension. The colors are carried through with the coordinating Candy Dots (Item #130933). They provide the perfect “Finishing Touch”.

Candy Dots - Subtles Item 130933

Candy Dots – Subtles Item #130933

Very simple and interesting at the same time.  Think outside the box when it comes to using these grunge type stamps.  Grunge stamps as background images with bright colors? Try “stamping off” some of the color before stamping on your project.

P.S.  I love the card my husband gave me. ;)

Pals Earth Day Blog Hop

2014aprhop_badgeWelcome to the Pals Earth Day Blog Hop.  As you move through our April Blog Hop, you’ll see projects that feature recycled, re-purposed, or natural themed elements just in time for Earth Day!

You may be starting the blog hop here or you may have hopped over from Debbie Mageed at Secret Stamper, Stop #6 of the Hop Line-up. Either way, you’ll find the full lineup below to will help you move along from blog to blog so you see all of the amazing creations.

Can you guess what my project is?  Here’s a hint… it holds craft necessity.

Earth Day Blog HopIf you guessed a Craft Mat Holder, you would be right!

Do you use a rubber band to tote your craft mat from crop to crop?  Time to class it up a bit and recycle at the same time, starting with a paper towel cardboard core.  Earth Day Blog HopEverything used to create this earthy cover is scrap or would be garbage except the Gold Baker’s Twine.  The trick is to use what you have on hand.  No cheating!

The core was wrapped with corrugated craft paper, some leftover birch paper from last fall and extra buttons left over from last year. The corrugated paper is doing double duty.  Not only does it decorate the plain cardboard tube, it also makes it more sturdy. Everything is held together with hot melt glue.

I’ve been meaning to create this project for quite some time.  Now it’s done!

The next stop is Jackie Diediker at Stampin’ Jackie, Stop #8 on the Pals Blog Hop! Thanks for visiting and  I hope to see you next month.

A Tisket a Basket

WWPA2014-04-04 - TOPPER BASKET PPA198Pals Paper Arts Color Challenge #198 A tisket a basket, it’s another Pals Paper Arts challenge and the colors are whispering spring.  Hmm…. not much of a poet am I.  Summer Starfruit, Pool Party and Old Olive band together for the perfect combination for these little Scalloped Tag Topper Mini Baskets.

I just love how they turned out.  They were inspired by a little basket seen on Pinterest.  The original basket was created with the Two Tags Bigz Die, now retired.

Have you ever convinced yourself not to purchase a new tool because you could do the same thing with what you already have?  That’s how it was for me with the Scalloped Tag Topper Punch. I had to be convinced.  Pinterest played a big part in the convincing.  Or should we say “enabling”.  That seems to be a trendy word around the paper crafting community these days. And, I seem to use it a lot lately. Hmm do is there a reality show for this?

Could you create a similar tag with Framelits? Of course you could. However, the punch is quick.  No pulling out the Big Shot and Framelits.  Just grab the punch and go.  Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE my Framelits.

Scallop Tag Topper Punch 133324

Scallop Tag Topper Punch Item #133324

Shhh don’t tell Framelits but punches were my first love. There’s definitely room for two loves in my tack room.

Stampin’ Up! offers two of these Tag Topper Punches.  Check out the Angled Tag Topper Punch.

Tag Topper Punch 133323

Tag Topper Punch Item #133323

What can YOU do with these special tools?  The possibilities are truly endless.  I know, not very punny.  At the risk of going nowhere with this line of humor let’s get to the Nuts and Bolts of these projects.

Today’s Featured Items:

    • Angled Tag Topper Punch (#133323)
    • Scalloped Tag Topper Punch (#133324)

Before I let you go, here’s another crack at a poem.  Ready?

How’s that?

Nuts & Bolts for A Tisket a Basket:  Card Stock (Old Olive #100702); Designer Series Paper (Epic Day This and That #130814, High Tide #132992); Accessories (Large Pearls Basic Jewels #125577, Linen Thread #104199, Old Olive 1/8″ Taffeta Ribbon); Tools: (Big Shot #113439, Blossom Party Originals Die #115971, Bird Builder Punch #117191, Scalloped Tag Topper Punch #133324, Paper Snips #103579, Stampin Trimmer #126889); Adhesives (Glue Dots #103683, SNAIL #104332, Sticky Strip #104294); Miscellaneous Non-Stampin’Up Supplies (Paper Shreds).  All supplies are Stampin’ Up! unless otherwise noted.

Wonderful Butterfly

Designed by Ruth Blumberg It’s time to share some outside inspiration starting with this wonderful butterfly by a dear friend, Ruth Blumberg.

Every month few of my friends get together and share ideas, paper crafting and great food.  This is one we shared in March.  I thought it would be fun to re-make it with current Stampin’ Up! products.

First change made was the stamp set.  This was a real dilemma since I don’t have anything remotely similar to the beautiful set Ruth used.  My Digital Studio (MDS) to the rescue! The stamp MDS Stamp Brush set is called Sweet Summer and is included with the MDS Software.

Even though the color she used (Sage Shadow) is retired, it’s still available in MDS.  I chose to use a Gumball Green so current matching card stock and ink could be used. A shadow was used to give the main image some depth.  Hard to see here but you would definitely see a difference if it was taken off.

Summer Sweet Butterfly

Summer Sweet Butterfly

The Elegant and Bitty Butterflies are from the Papillon Potpourri traditional stamp set inked with Gumball Green Classic Ink and punched with coordinating punches, Elegant Butterfly and Bitty Butterfly.  Pearls Basic Jewels add just the right accent.

Now for the inside.  This is where MDS really shines on a card.

Summer Sweet Butterfly CardInsideThe outside was duplicated and the density was changed to about 50% of the original creating a perfect backdrop for the inside sentiment.  In case you’re wondering, all of the text is also from My Digital Studio. So easy!

Here’s another version with the butterflies in Sahara Sand for a softer look.

Summer Sweet ButterflyThese are just a few tricks for maximizing your My Digital Studio software.  Digital can still be handmade.

What do you think?

A Really Good Greeting PPA197

A Really Good GreetingAre you ready for another challenge from Pals Paper Arts?  Here it is, a fantastic sketch by Nicole Watt.  PPA197 is perfect for a really good greeting.

PPA 197 Sketch ChallengeWhat is a really good greeting anyway?  Well, for me it’s a greeting that gives me a warm feeling inside or makes me smile.  It should also roll off the tongue. The Really Good Greetings Stamp Set is just perfect with its six sassy greetings.

Really Good GreetingsAt first glance, this sketch made me think of a poker hand.  Since I’m not a gambler I have no idea where that came from.  Could it be the Reno connection?  After that thought was extinguished tags came to mind.  Two tags tucked under a ribbon with sweet, butterflies punched from Watercolor Wonder Designer Series Paper floating around. Pearls and linen thread finish it off.

Whenever you build a card around the sentiment it seems to come together much quicker. The sketch helps a bunch too! So, if you’re board or in a creative slump, come out and play with us at Pals Paper Arts.

Today’s Featured Items:

  • Really Good Greetings Stamp Set (Clear Mount #130333; Wood Mount #130330, MDS #134805)

Watercolor Songbird

WWPA2014-03-20 - PPA196 Watercolor Songbirdhttp://stampinpretty.typepad.com/.a/6a00e54f95df92883401a3fcd9d328970b-piHappy Spring!  The clear sky is a beautiful blue, at least in Northern Nevada.  A watercolor songbird would make the day just perfect.  If you’re in a part of the world with icky weather, you can borrow my sweet little bird to brighten the day.

What makes a great day even more special?  A Pals Paper Arts Challenge, of course! Sometimes the featured sketch leaves me scratching my head.  Not this time.  Requirements were:

  • Beautiful Sunny Sky – Check
  • Some Greenery – Check
  • A Fine Feathered Friend – Check

All present and accounted for!

The beautiful sky was easy with Watercolor Wonder Designer Series Paper.  Our fine feathered friend and greenery was punched with the Bird Builder Punch from Watercolor Wonder as well,  A with a few scraps of Gumball Green card stock were added for good measure.

WWPA2014-03-20 - PPA196 Watercolor Songbird DetailDaffodil Delight Seam Binding symbolizes the Forsythia that’s just starting to bud and a few sprigs of Linen Thread were added to resemble twigs left over from last year. Guess what’s going on in my yard this weekend?!

Did you notice the embossed banner?  The Decorative Dots Textured Impressions Embossing Folder has got to be my favorite Sale-A-Bration item this year.

It could be used to simulate:

    • Clouds
    • Confetti
    • Cotton
    • Rain
    • Snow

Can you think of anything else? Leave a comment with some ideas.  I’d love to hear.

Only one problem with this embossing folder.  There’s no guarantee it will be here after Sale-A-Bration ends on March 31, 2014.  That’s only 11 days away.  When you order from my Stampin’ Up! Online Store, don’t forget to use the current Hostess Code ADT3HBZZ.  Don’t want to order online?  No problem, send me an email (rae@wildwestpaperarts.com) or call 775-657-5959.  I’ll help you any way I can.
